A scene with Rebel pilots inside their home base on the ice planet Hoth was originally shot in London with British actors and extras during the regular production schedule in 1979. However, a few months later during post-production at Lucasfilm’s visual effects facility, Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) in Marin County, California, George Lucas indicated that he was unhappy with the shot; specifically the look of the background set piece (in fact it looked like a mohair rug hanging on a wall, causing many chuckles from the ILM crew). So Irvin Kershner, the film’s director was asked to come to ILM and reshoot the scene against a blue screen using, this time as “actors” some of the effects people (myself included) then working at ILM.
